Project Background

Geotest Services was engaged to undertake remediation works following the identification of significant contamination at the Site, including approximately 8,000 tonnes of non-fraible asbestos-impacted soil, 4,000 tonnes of hydrocarbon-impacted soils, and multiple underground petroleum storage systems requiring decommissioning.

Following treatment of impacted soils, Geotest Services supervised the placement of treated materials and provided geotechnical and testing support during subsequent civil works.

Works Undertaken:

  • Asbestos-impacted soils were remediated using an on-site treatment approach, involving physical removal (hand-picking) of visible asbestos fibre cement fragments from impacted soil materials.

  • Hydrocarbon-impacted soils were treated on site via landfarming, with remediation progress monitored using a Photoionisation Detector. Treatment included tilling and turning of soils, exposure to sunlight and the application of fertilisers to accelerate the bioremediation process.

  • Supervision was provided during the excavation and removal of underground petroleum storage systems, including oversight of removal works and assessment of surrounding soils.

  • Level 1 geotechnical supervision was provided during bulk earthworks, including placement of treated materials within the development footprint, followed by Level 2 testing during pavement construction.

  • Construction testing and verification were undertaken to confirm earthworks and material placement met project requirements and were suitable for the proposed land use.

Project Outcome

  • The majority of impacted soils were treated and reused on site, avoiding off-site disposal and delivering an estimated $3 million in savings. Treated materials met the adopted site assessment criteria and were placed at appropriate depths in accordance with current legislation, eliminating the need for long-term management.

  • Underground petroleum storage systems were safely decommissioned and removed, with surrounding soils and groundwater assessed to confirm hydrocarbon impacts were effectively managed and did not pose an ongoing environmental risk.

  • Geotechnical supervision and testing confirmed the correct placement and suitability of treated materials for safe use within the development footprint, supporting compliant earthworks and long-term performance of pavements and infrastructure.
